So yesterday I came across a journal about Twilight... which somehow brought me back to a conversation with an on-line friend, which somehow brought me back to a real life encounter, which somehow... whatever, that doesn’t matter.
No, this journal isn’t about Twilight. No. Get out. Now.
For those of you who are still here, let me get into the subject. Missconception about... about life? I dunno how else to describe it. We’re all part of fandoms no matter what. Some are more severe then others, granted.
You see, I came across a boy – no idea how old he was, so let’s just keep it to genitalia generalization plz! – who had it engraved in his mind that ALL GIRLS like Twilight. Why would he – and many others – think this? He was completely flabbergasted by the thought that I don’t like Twilight and I am not in love with Edward Cullen. In fact, I don’t think he believed me because he raved on about the upcoming movies anyways.
Upon talking to my best friend about this, she said it reminded me of the times when she met guys who were utterly convinced that the only girls who played tabletop games like D&D and Werewolf were fat and ugly. I’m not fat and I’m certainly not ugly. She’s not fat and definitely not ugly. In fact, I know plenty of pretty girls who play tabletop games. Where in hell did this missconception come from? I’ve heard it too, sadly from a new player in our Werewolf games too. Never heard of girls playing these games at all. I guess it explains why whenever I go in a comic book shoppe without going into the manga section, or whenever I go into tabletop rpg specialized shops all the guys look at me with wide 2 dollar eyes and a little tent... which I’d rather not talk about. *shudders* But I can talk about the wide eyes. Why is it so strange? It’s true there are less girls who play these games, but... it’s really not THAT bad, geez.
And the same goes for video games and other fanchises! “You play Mortal Kombat!?” “You played Mass Effect?!” “You like Resident Evil?!” “You like Transformers!??!” “You liked Transformers BEFORE the movies and before the cuteness that is Bumblebee???!!!” Just add some corny love music and some wind in our hairs and they’ve found love.
Why is it so strange? Why can’t I hate Twilight and enjoy playing a male character in a tabletop game (without being fat, ugly and a closet lesbian for playing a hot guy?... because... well... yeah Adrian’s hot... BUT THAT’S BESIDE THE POINT!) and enjoy Xbox/PS3 games that don’t require me to play a 3D version of Tetris (because girls only play Tetris duuuurrr)!
Anyways... What are your thoughts on the subject? Any other general missconceptions you’d like to share?
Much lurv,
Maria
Quick edit: I just wanted to make sure people knew I don't mean this as only boys have missconceptions about girls. Those are the missconceptions I encounter the most lately so they're merely examples

It's not an affront against boys here, far from it.

Carry on!

Regardless of all that, you sit me in front of a game like Silent Hill, Resident Evil, F.E.A.R., Mortal Kombat, Fall Out 3, or Bioshock, and I'm happy as a camper. And yes, I drink Dr. Pepper and eat fucking cheetos while I play.
I'm 5'9" and weigh 127lbs. Yeah! Munch them cheetos! Woo!
Ahem...
...my cheezy poofs.
This stereotype is seriously getting old... Hm, well I guess there's a certain charm to it in a way. As much as it's annoying sometimes that guys will be surprised that pretty girls play games, it's also kinda flattering lol
While I've encountered people who hold those sorts of misconceptions before, it's not quite as bad in my area, it seems. In face, the local game store where the guys go to brows D&D and WOD stuff actually has a fairly attractive female that works there.
Then again, I think there's probably a big difference in places you go. This town has three colleges in it, and a TON of younger people, many of whom seem to be doin' their own thing, ya know? There were a TON of female gamers at Ben's old dorm.
But, yes, general population of Earth, I think there are far too few.
Misconceptions, stereotyping, etc SUCK.
The one I see that bugs me the most:
*If you have tattoos, piercings, wear notable amount of black (or any combination of the above) one or more of the following characteristics MUST be true:
-You're a "goth"
-You're depressed/whiny/suicidal/obsessed with death
-You don't like to smile or laugh and just want to be sad/angry all the time.
-You're a jerk or have a bad attitude
-You're generally not a 'good' person
-You must love cigarettes, beer, and partying
-You're atheist, wiccan, satanist, pagan, or cultist, and can't possibly be a Christian
I can understand these misconceptions. I really can. It just bugs me to no end that there are so many people out there not willing to give an individual a chance.
Another that drives me crazy is that all African Americans are into rap, hip hop, want to be gangsters. And just the idea that a black individual might like oh, say, OLDIES and is into tabletopping, Star Trek, costuming, and all that typical "nerdy" stuff is SUCH A HUGE FREAKING SURPRISE.
Why?!
In talking to my family/other friends about things that me and my closest group of friends enjoy doing, they always seem surprised about one of the individuals in my group for that reason.. but darnit, she's freaking AWESOME. And I get kindof irritated when people are so shocked.
*grumble*
Oh well.
People are gullible. Most listen to what a society and a select few have to say, and tend to just ASSUME the rest, it seems.
-CTW
Those stereotypes are awful... ANY stereotype is awful.
It's true that a lot of people will think that african americans are all over rap, hip hop, etc... It's not true at all. I can't say there aren't some who don't feed the stereotype but really... Every stereotype comes from a handful of people who make the stereotype true.
The "goth" one is as ridiculous.
ohh, that vid made me lol
The guys turned at me and were like, "...How do you know this stuff?" I went, "Duh, I'm a nerd, guys. Live with it."
It was by far my favourite moment in college.
That incident was awesome XD It IS fun to show off our nerdiness when we don't look it lol When I was working at Costco, there were a few make cashiers who were into games and the moment I started talking about games their eyes would go like this: O___O "You play games?" Well... yeah. Why not? Apparently I don't look the type lol
I find it kinda charming in a way and I guess there's a certain flattery there.
Here's the funny part.
I've been proposed to, and asked to have their children.
Seriously guys. It's flattering, but no. Just give me your sexy role playing skills, leave the proposals and the sexings out of it...til after the game at least. XD
This is madness.
.
.
.
Don't say it. lol
It's funny because they figure, after I tell them I love video games, that I'm into games like Final Fantasy, Tetris, Barbie's new castle, etc... And then I say "Are you kidding!? Give me Gears of War, Bioshock, Resident Evilm Fallout 3...." And their jaws usually fall to the ground. Then comes the question, do I play tabletop games? I do!
Blam, love at first sight. For them. We're not THAT uncommon, I'm pretty sure of it.
