500km Meteorite Hits The Earth.

Video Link: youtube.com/ watch?v= DtuIVM61nKE

The link doesn't work well because DS is seeing two symbols together and turns it into a smiley. So I broke down the link. Just copy and paste the whole thing in your toolbar, put it all together with the www that goes with youtube. Thanks! </b>

It's beautiful video albeit slightly scary.

One comment in there caught my eye: Not likely to happen. This scenerio was more common billions of years ago</b>

So is this guy implying we're safe from this? Large meteors only roamed the galaxy millions of years ago? Hmmmm... don't think so. In the 90's there was a big scare when meteors bigger or the size of the Earth entered our Solar System and was heading straight for us. Know what saved us? Jupiter. It's gravitational pull had the meteors crash into the gas giant. We got lucky because if Jupiter had not been in the right orbit, we wouldn't be here right now.

So it could happen at any given time. Luckily, scientists and astronomers have come to the same conclusion: there is no threat for now.

This is our best guess for some of the mass extinctions on Earth. Though, uh, I don't really understand why the simulation shows the ocean exploding on contact >_>. (No, really, it's orange even before it touches the crust. Huh?)

The whole thing is so huge and hits with such an impact, I don't see why not.

But it's just a simulation, really... Frankly, we won't care about that when/if it happens lol

Haha yeah XD Luckily I doubt we'd have time to know what's going on. This was pretty much in slow motion.

What that person was trying to say was "stray chunks of rock were more prominent in the solar system billions of years ago." But you're right, we're not entirely safe from asteroids.

Hm perhaps.

I think we've been lucky since the last big hit. Can you imagine? This has happened 6 times!? Damn....
