This is so sad.
With the internet and today's means of communication, it's quite easy to come across a lot of people's lives nowadays. Just look at this website, forums, etc....
This year I truly came to realize how fucking spoiled children are. I see them complain because all they got was a laptop</b> and an IPod</b> for X-Mas. Complain because they only got 5 PS3/Xbox 360 games</b>. Because ALL the got was 500$</b>. Because ALL they got was a list longer then my arm which was ridiculously expensive, but they didn't have the Wii they asked for (nm the PS3, laptop and blackberry from that list). And they DARE call their parents cheap</b>?!
When I was a kid, I was lucky if I got ONE Sega Genesis game. The biggest presents I ever got during my childhood were a Sega Genesis for my 12th birthday, a VCR and a cat for my 15th Christmas. Oh, and a cd/cassette Radio when I was 13 I believe. The rest were small things. A cd here, a game there and clothes. Usually no more then a 100$ in cash, or they helped me pay half of my train tickets to visit my best friend. Makes your list look like a millionaire's gig, don't it?
STOP COMPLAINING! ENJOY WHAT YOU HAVE! STOP BEING SO SELFISH AND SEE WHAT YOU HAVE, NOT WHAT YOU DON'T HAVE!
I swear, I'll work my hardest to make sure my child NEVER turns out that way.
The world may end tomorrow and everybody has their noses in their wallets.
It's sad to see adults act this way, but it's a LOT sadder seeing children act the same way as if all that's important is appearance and the value of their accessories. I remember when I was a kid, I had 5$ a week for doing my chores. If I missed just one, I didn't have my 5$. I see kids flip and complain they didn't get their 80$ a week allowance because their parents couldn't afford it that week. Who cares if the parents couldn't afford it, they DESERVED their allowance even though they did nothing to earn it.
I've said it often but... I want to make sure my child never gets that stupid mentality. 5$ a week is probably all he/she'll get, and they'll have to be happy with that as long as they do all their chores and homework.
I EARNED what I got. There was no getting what I wanted without earning it. I remember I got a VCR for my 14th X-Mas and I was SO ecstatic! Oh and a cat. I got a few Sega Genesis games but again, I had earned them. And I never EVER complained about what I got. I enjoyed it.
My child won't like me if he/she pulls that crap on me. As you said... coal for next Christmas >
I got my kid cousins a few good books, a Korean chessboard, and a few poncho liners this Christmas and not only do they not squabble amongst themselves for them or complain that they didn't get something better, but they actually enjoy the heck out of them together. Watching kids like them give me a bit of a boost of morale as far as the younger generations are going.
In conclusion, try not to let the "Verucas" (oblige me the Willy Wonka reference) of the world ruin your fun, and good luck molding your child to be exempt of such vain traits.
When it comes to presents, it was the same for me. I had a few, never a lot, but those I got, I appreciated. Something as simple as a Diary with a little lock meant the world to me (I think I still have it too!
It won't ruin my fun, no worries
Anyway, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who acknowledges this terrible fact of life, that people today are so spoiled and immoral. I think that it'll only get worse from here, so we better get used to this before they drop A-Bombs on Australia for thinking that there's terrorists on the country.
I've seen kids get angry at their parents because it wasn't the "color" they wanted.
You're a very kind person and I do hope people around you recognize the efforts you put out for them. I don't know a lot of people who would spend their Christmas money on other people. Hell... I don't know anyone who would.
It may get worst, but I'll work hard so my child knows the value of earning what they get, and to enjoy what they have, not what they don't have. Yesterday even, I saw on the front page how some 15 year old was pissed at their parents because they were taking away his laptop due to bad grades. He was angry and didn't understand the point, etc... And he'd try to go behind his mother's back to coax his dad to let him have some laptop time anyway. By 15, I understood why things were taken away from me. Hell, I didn't have things taken away from me because I was responsible and would work hard not to get into trouble with my parents. And what did his precious watchers answer? "Omg your parents are SUCH assholes!", etc... Here's another reason why internet time will be VERY watched.
But I've been striving away from the subject.
As for dropping A-Bombs... Well we're pretty much in the same boat in Canada. lol We're the neighbors from the US, but we're being more and more pushed away and watched more at the borders then most other countries. -_-; We used not to need a passport to go shopping in New York. Now you better have a passport or you'll never go through. Eventually they'll just fix the problem and drop the bombs on us in case some more terrorists would hide among us. -_-;
I never thought we'd be watched the most, but I guess it shows just how much paranoia isolationism had made the U.S.A., considering how they never had a war in their country, or even an invasion of any sort. It's appropriate to take those precautions when it first happens, and I'll give them that. Strange part about it, was that during my time in British Columbia, I used to live near the border, and I heard that someone saw a fully equipped army patrol walking around near his residence; and I mean FULLY equipped. I had a good laugh at it, but then it got me thinking, if the States were to invade us, we'd be pretty much screwed from all sides, with Alaska being a state and all.
